Presentation Proposal for ELCE 2010
Name of Presenter: Harald Welte <laforge@gnumonks.org>
Title: Running your own GSM+GPRS network using OpenBSC, OsmoSGSN and OpenGGSN
Presentation may be published: Yes
Presentation may be video-recorded + published: Yes
Brief Abstract:
Considering how ubiquitous Free Software is in the area of Internet networking
is, there has been surprisingly little Free Software in the area of GSM standards
based cellular networking. In the last two years, project OpenBSC was developed
to change this. It implements the neccessarry signalling protocol stack and
provide a miniature "GSM network in a box" application for small networks,
replacing traditional BSC, MSC, HLR, EIR and SMSC.
Using the recently-developed OsmoSGSN and the existing OpenGGSN software, this
GSM network can be extended by the neccessarry components to also provide
packet-switched data services like GPRS and EDGE(EGPRS).
The presentation will introduce the software architecture and give a
practical demonstration.
Misc Notes:
The demonstration requires an experimental/test license from the UK regulatory
body OFCOM. I will provide all neccessary technical data to acquire this
license.
